Title supplied by cataloger. The Macy Street Underpass began construction in 1931 by the City of Los Angeles and headed by architect Merrill Butler. The structure is a closed-spandrel reinforced concrete elliptical arch with earth fill. During his career at the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering that spanned four decades, Merrill Butler (1891-1963) supervised the construction of over 200 bridges, fifteen of which have been determined eligible for National Register of Historic Places. View of the Macy Street Underpass looking east, while a tile layer works deep inside and to the right of the underpass. Tracks were exposed during construction in preparation for the streetcars. The Macy Street Underpass is located at E. Cesar Chavez Avenue and N. Vignes Street.
