In 1937 seventy-five set decorators broke away from the IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Machine Operators of the United States and Canada) to form their own association, the Society of Motion Picture Interior Decorators (SMPID) and negotated an independent contract with the producers. In 1943 they would affiliate with the CSU Local 1421. Photograph caption dated May 1, 1937 reads "Photo shows a group of pickets on duty. They wear armbands carrying the initials, FMPC, for Federation of Motion Picture Crafts. Three affiliated unions of the FMPC, including painters, paperhangers, decorators and makeup and scenic artists, are out. Studios were shooting despite the walkout." A small group of men are pictured in front of a house with signs that say "Open" and "For sale."
