Photograph caption dated March 9, 1963 reads, "Smokey the Bear, famous mascot of the U. S. Forest Service, drew the rapt attention of Riverside Elementary School pupils in Van Nuys Friday when he appeared to tell them: 'Only you can prevent forest fires.'"
