Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Los Angeles Times building as seen from the corner of Broadway and First Street, showing the damage from a bomb blast and fire as well as a crowd of onlookers, October, 1910. The Los Angeles Times building sits at the right centerground of the image, behind the paved lane of First Street that runs horizontally through the foreground of the image. What remains of the building is charred, with many of the windows missing
behind the building is a large expanse of debris where the rest of the building stood prior to the explosion. Workmen stand along Broadway and amongst the debris. A steam fire engine sits at the left edge of the image. A crowd stands along the edge of First Street in the extreme foreground of the image, while other highrises are visible in the background.
Picture file card dated June 10, 1980 for "31102-31108" reads: "A series of photographs relating to the bombing of the Los Angeles Times in early October, 1910. Photographs are included relating to the prosecution of the McNamara Brothers in mid-late 1911. The origin of these photographs is uncertain but possibly they were gathered for use as evidence at the trial. This series is generated from originals of varying sizes up to 16x20 which were held in CHS collections without negatives. These numbers are a selection from a much larger series which details the physical damage caused by the bombing, which are uncatalogued".
