Photograph caption dated November 4, 1984 reads, "The winner of the Herald's "Lunch Box Special" contest was Rambses Ramirez, 11, of Montebello, a student at La Merced Intermediate School. Ramirez' winning recipe was "chili beef pastry" a chili-and-beef mixture wrapped in dough, which he said he was taught to make by his grandmother. Ramirez wins an Apple personal computer. Second place went to Mike Stotts, 12, of Covina, with the "Last of the Great Gobbler" sandwich, a turkey, cranberry sauce, nuts, cream-cheese combination on pumpernickel bread. The Ruddock School student wins a Hitachi 13-inch color television. Finishing in third place was Jennifer Diaz, 10, of Ontario. She placed with a "cream-cheese special" with apple on raisin-walnut bread garnished with carrots and two peanut-butter cookies. Diaz is a student at Vina Danks School. She wins an Emerson stereo system. Out of the 400 total entries in the Herald's contest, there were 25 finalists. Those not placing in the top three each received a $25 savings bond."
