Description
The photo caption printed in the Sacramento Bee on February 3, 1963 reads: "A 150 foot section of the new US Highway 40 freeway at the Whitmore Maintenance Station in Placer County collapsed onto the station's parking area, closing the eastbound portion of the highway until late spring or early summer. A second slide of the same size occurred a half mile west of this one. Two way traffic eventually will be routed over the westbound lane in the background."
