Description
The recollection of World War II starting with the Pearl Harbor attack from Misao Okada's perspective. She describes the shock she felt when she learned that Japan was the United State's enemy and the signing of Executive Order 9066. She then describes how the Terminal Islanders first went to the Santa Anita Racetrack--carried there by bus. Each family was assigned a horse stall. Her family, along with the others from the Seinan District of Los Angeles arrived at Santa Anita during the third week of April and were assigned a room in a barrack on Fairy Hill row. The following September they moved to Granada, Colorado. She recalls the first day as one of extreme heat. She then describes the social aspects of the camp including education, formed theatrical and musical groups, and held social gatherings. Both of her brothers were drafted to the U.S. Army. The last paragraph of this statement describes the reparations of 1990. Scrapbook page from Misao Okada’s album.
Misao Okada’s scrapbook contains photographs, ephemera, notes, and correspondence documenting her time at Amache and a visit and reunion over 50 years later. The scrapbook also includes materials relating to reparations and events observing Japanese American incarceration.
