Description
This program is from the Barbara Romack Championship Tournament held at Sacramento's Bing Maloney Golf Course from May 9 to 10, 1953. The tournament, sponsored by the American Women's Voluntary Services of California, featured America's leading professional and amateur women golfers.
Barbara Romack was born and raised in Sacramento, California, graduating from McClatchy High School. She became one of the best golfers of her generation. Romack gained national prominence after winning the 1954 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and becoming the first female golfer to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1956. Following an illustrious amateur career, she turned professional in 1958 and played nearly twenty years on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour.
