Description
Photograph of the exterior of the Shell Chemical Corporation exterior, a plant composed of Butadiene producing facilities, in August 1955. Several fractioning columns shoot up from a convoluted maze of pipes and tanks. Metal-railed stairs lead from one level to the next, while cylindrical metal casings line ladders built into the columns. What appears to be a heavily populated area lines the distance, beneath the lines of utility poles. The background is otherwise neutral. Photoprint reads: "The heart of the butaldieve producing faciliites of the Shell Chmical Corp's synthetic rubber plant in Torrance -- scene shows pipes and fractioning columns. Butadiene is produced by splitting off hydrogen from butylene gas. The feedstock, butylene, is a by-product of oil refineries cracking process".
