Photograph of Ahira Holmes, principal of the State Normal School from 1862-65. Ahira Holmes was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1823. He attended the State Normal School of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and taught in the Plymouth public school before moving to California in 1852. Holmes was principal in both a San Francisco public school and a grammar school in Los Angeles before accepting an appointment as principal of the State Normal School in San Jose.
