Photograph caption date stamped May 18, 1963 partially reads, "Notre Dame pitcher John Herbst, the most-sought-after prep baseball player in California, can thank a small group of angry neighbors for his introduction to baseball at the tender age of six. 'I had a terrific urge to throw things when I was younger,' explained Herbst, 'and they usually wound up going through someone's window. My parents suggested I put my arm to good use and try the next best thing - baseball.'"
