Description
Photograph of Brauch Street, in Arroyo Grande, taken from Olohan Building, California, [s.d.]. A wide unpaved road runs between two rows of buildings, and a tall wooden post stands in the foreground, part of it apparently edited out with white. Several horse-drawn carts and carriages can be seen along the sides of the road, while pedestrians mull about near the entrances to shops. Utility wires are visible overhead. Additional information: "The view is from the Olohan Building (named after an Irish immigrant James Olohan, an owner of one of the local saloons). The large wooden building at the left is the Ryan Hotel on the right, the stone building on the corner is the Bank of Arroyo Grande. The photograph was taken at the corner of Branch and Bridge Streets according to a 1903 Sanborn Fire Insurance map, just beyond the bank building is one of seven saloons in the immediate vicinity (lower Branch Street). Town constable Henry Llewellyn was shot in the doorway of the Capitol Saloon in 1904 and died the next day in the Ryan Hotel" -- UCSDL Patron, December 1, 2016. Originally, the image was captioned as "Brauch Street, in Arroyo Grande, taken from Alohan Building, Arizona, [s.d.]".
