Description
Note: Signatur: "A.
Note translation: Signature: "A. La Riviere
Litho'r. 18, Clifton St." - Published (West 1857: 216) and (Evangelisches Missions-Magazin 1859). - Caption in the latter: "The titelbild of this number shows the native King of Cape Coast, Quacoe Atta, as he was photographed by the preacher Daniel West. His african majesty sits on a stately throne. On his forehead you can see decorations with golden embroidery, doubtless intended to give the impression of a crown. His right wrist is decorated with a number of heavy gold bracelets, he has a diamond ring on his little finger, on his left wrist he has a cuff with gold embroidery. A heavy gold chain hangs around his neck. In his right hand he holds an elephant tail as fly-switch. In his left hand he has a kind of sceptre. A rich silk cloth lies, in comely folds, over the lower part of his body."
