Description
196, 198, 200 East Blithedale, This building abuts the sidewalk, with the front portion in a half-timbered style. There are two side-by-side entry doors in the center bordered by heavy framed, multi paned windows on either side The area below the windows is used brick and there is a barber pole mounted above the right door. This front commercial section is built onto a two-story stucco house with a four-windowed gabled dormer looking over the roof peak of the front section. A driveway goes along the right side of the building. Captions with the photo state, "196 - 198 - 200 East Blithedale. The house was built in 1920 by Fred Glahn who worked for a dairy company. He was transferred to the East Bay in 1924 and sold the property to a family named Stout (son Gregory was an outstanding track star at UC Berkeley and is now a practicing attorney in San Francisco). The Westleader family lived here in the late 20's to mid 30's followed by the Whitecomb family. The Chourres were here in the late 30's and early 40's. The building and shops are still owned by Tom Eubanks" "200 East Blithedale. This was the Westlater house. He operated the first Standard station in the 30's. Later, the house was occupied by the Jules Chourre family. Jules was the teacher of print shop at Tamalpais High School for many years. The house was sold to Tom Eubanks who operated a plumbing shop here in the 50's. The slogan on his panel trucks was "I'll keep your wife in Hot Water". From the 1983 Walk into History.
