Description
This sash is part of mourning regalia worn in a parade for the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln (1865). President Lincoln's body was taken by train to 12 cities where he was viewed by the public, before arriving at his final resting place in Illinois. This sash was designed to be worn over right shoulder. It is visible in a Harper's Bazaar illustration and an original photo of the procession in Chicago on May 1, 1865. The sash is made of a stiff fabric, probably silk tissue, in black and white, with a dark brown lining of a similar fabric. There is an old glass-headed pin helping to secure the cockade to the sash where the ends cross. Both cockades are also basted on with black thread. Originally cataloged by S. Nunes.
