Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Upper left is a group portrait from 1912 showing Sara as a teacher with her class in the Ukraine; upper right shows Sara in 1910 when she was a high school student in the Ukraine; the photographs on the bureau are of Sara's grandchildren. Sara is the grandmother of David J. Orenstein.
