Description
Image of a young girl clutching a giant bunch of celery in an advertisement for Rice's seeds; large salsify with a label featuring a bunch of salsifies and identifying it as the "Mammoth Sandwich Island" variety; row of celery plants being cultivated at bottom center; man in a jacket and top hat hawking wares next to a partial view of the United States Capitol with "Rice" lettered on the dome at top center.
"Ho everyone who plants a garden. Try a package of our new celery the golden self-blanching. Sandwich Island Mammoth Salsify or oyster plant."--text, top left of image. "Salsify. Mammoth Sandwich Island. We consider this the largest and most profitable salsify in cultivation. Roots are two to three times the size of the ordinary salsify and of a more agreeable flavor. It is pure white in color and invaluable to market gardeners. The salsify is one of the most delicious and nutritious of vegetables, and should be more generally cultivated for use in winter, when the supply of real good vegetables are so limited."--text, center right of image. "Grows fit for table use with only one hoeing up. Rice's superior stock of golden self-blanching celery seed. Large sized packets. Genuine. Found only in Rice's box of choice vegetables."--text, bottom center of image.
