“Itigi from the railway shed. There were only 2 or 3 houses here. It is 300 odd miles from the coast & about 4000 feet up. Water tanks on left.” Landscape view showing train tracks running past a few buildings and a water tower, a train has stopped on one of the lines. Lt. Irvine was sent to Itigi to relieve Capt. Carpenter for several weeks in July 1917. ❧ The image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During this time he would meet Dr John W Arthur which in turn would lead to his missionary work at Chogoria in Kenya.
