Photograph caption reads: "George T. Woodring, in charge of buying flags for J. C. Penny Company, at first thought he might be stuck with over a million 49-star flags in a 50-state country. Patriotic Flag Buyer Woodring read the news of Hawaii's admission to the Union with mixed emotions. However, he has found that customers are buying the 49-star flags as souvenirs and he's now getting reorders from Penney stores. Said Mr. Woodring, 'For the first time in my life I got indigestion from pineapples and it was really touch-and-go until the reorders started coming in. The 49-star flag, thank heaven, is becoming a collector's item." Photograph dated: May 4, 1959.
