Description
Malvin Greston Whitfield was born in 1924. He was a middle-distance runner who won three Olympic gold medals for the United States, in 1948 and 1952. He was a Tuskegee Airman, and later became an American good-will ambassador promoting athletics abroad. He died on November 19, 2015.; Anthony P. Rios was born in 1915. He was a founder of the Community Service Organization, a statewide group formed in 1947 to mobilize Mexican Americans for community action. Rios was a mentor to Edward Roybal, and in 1949 the CSO helped Roybal become the first Mexican American in more than 70 years to serve on the council. Other leaders who emerged from the group include Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, former California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso, and State Assemblyman Gil Cedillo. Rios died on May 19, 1999.; Earl Gilmore was an oil magnate and developer. His many accomplishments include the Gilmore Stadium and the establishment of the Farmer's Market and the Gilmore Commerical and Savings Bank. He also served on the State and County Fish and Game Commission and the Los Angeles Police Commission.
