Description
This 1981 photograph captures proceedings of Sacramento’s inaugural Railfair celebration, a 10-day-long event celebrating California’s railroad heritage. A locomotive – Central Pacific Railroad locomotive “Nevada” – makes its way toward a turntable, located in the city’s Old Sacramento Historic District. To the left of the photograph is a stage where the “Song of the Iron Horse,” a song and dance pageant, honoring the advent of rail in the American West, is being performed. Numerous spectators occupy large bleachers on both sides of the train. Dovetailing the event was the opening of the California State Railroad Museum at 111 I Street. Other events included a regatta, opening day parade, and rerun of the Pony Express. In the background are both the Sacramento River and the Tower Bridge.
