Description
Following severe winter temperatures in December 1990, bud samples were collected from six Concord grape vineyards that were a part of a mechanical pruning study. The vines in each vineyard had been subjected to either balance pruning (50 + 10) or mechanical pruning for four years. Samples were taken from the second to the sixth nodes of one-year-old canes. Fifty to 60 buds were taken from each of four replicates and cut to determine the level of injury to the primary, secondary, and tertiary buds. Data analysis indicated that in five of the six vineyards there was a trend for less injury to the mechanically pruned vines. Cold hardiness determinations during December 1991 and January 1992 of buds taken from the same vines showed more cold hardiness in the mechanically pruned vines in all six vineyards. Additional data will be presented.
