Photograph caption dated December 4, 1940 reads, “Some of the 200 of the first volunteers in the Selective Service Army who left Fort MacArthur today to go to Camp Ord near Monterey are shown when they boarded their special train. At the northern camp they’ll begin their year of training. They’ll live in tents for a while then move into big new barracks.” Additional photograph caption dated August 28, 1948 reads, “They’re in Uncle Sam’s uniform now. These draftees leave for army camp for training. They’ll live in tents, not houses, will hear the bugle, not the alarm clock.”
