Description
Photo caption printed in the Sacramento Bee on November 29,, 1972 states: "Gordon Brong, Folsom Zoo superintendent, makes a daily visit to the cage of a a special friend, who is a resident at the facility. The friend, a brown bear named Brian, is seriously ill but is being cared for by Brong and Dr. Brian Hunter, wild life pathologist for the State Department of Fish and Game. When the bear was brought to the Folsom Zoo from Plumas County, it was discovered he suffered from cancer of the jaw bone and the disease had made him sightless in one eye. However, with tender loving care from Brong and Hunter, Brian has grown chubby and his coat is thick and glossy. Brong does not know if the bear will recover from the illness."
