Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 31, 1944 reads, "While on the witness stand yesterday Chaplin testified with a deadly seriousness. His answers were calm and carefully considered. He was a good witness for Chaplin." Chaplin's attorney, Jerry Giesler, is marked out on the left.
