Description
In discussing the origin and physiology of vines, the authors refer to geological evidence that proves that in lignite, taken from a mine at Salzhausen, in Hesse-Darmstadt, north of the Main River, there were fossil impressions of leaves of the vine and grape seeds. It has been estimated that the geological formation of those impressions is at least a hundred thousand years old. Cf. Gabler, p. 278.
