Description
This May 23, 1922, photograph captures a procession of costumed children moving down the 600 block of J Street during the Days of ’49 celebration. The event was started in 1922 to commemorate the founding of Sacramento. The parade included a re-enactment of Capt. John Sutter’s exploration of the area and eventual founding of the fort that would bear his name. Seventy-five Native Americans were brought in from various Nevada reservations to make the event more authentic. Along another stretch of J Street, a skirmish was re-enacted, as Sutter was rescued from the group by the captain’s namesake militia, the Sutter Rifles, which was made up of men stationed at Mather Field.
