Montie Montana was born Owen Harlan Mickel in 1910. He was a trick rider who was a regular on the rodeo circuit in the United States and Canada and appeared in a number of John Wayne movies including "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence." He made more than 60 appearances in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and is remembered for roping President Dwight D. Eisenhower as part of a gag during the president's inaugural parade in 1953. He died in 1998 at age 87.
Photograph caption dated January 31, 1957 reads, "Cowboy Montie Montana, honorary mayor of Northridge, meets California Sen. Thomas Kuchel during Montana's visit in Washington, D. C., to take part in inaugural parade. Montana took entire family to Washington for inaugural."
