Description
Pictured in 1960 are the Chinese Republic Restaurant at 921 Third Street and the Lim Yuen Cafe at 925 Third Street.
The Chinese Republic Restaurant was in operation at this location as early as 1922 and catered off-site and in-house events. Founded by Chinese immigrant Chong Wong, who arrived in the city in 1884. It remained in the Wong family under the operation of Chong Wong's sons Arthur and Clarence until its destruction by the Sacramento Redevelopment Agency during a midcentury program of "urban renewal" which routed Interstate 5 through the heart of Sacramento's Chinatown.
Arthur Wong fought this route, arguing on behalf of the proposed alternative route on the other side of the Sacramento River, but ultimately the city and the Department of Highways decided in favor of the current alignment.
