Photograph caption dated January 23, 1963 reads "The use of the fibre glass [sic] pole in modern pole vault competition has caused considerable controversy. Some purests [sic] claim that it takes the real element of competition out of the sport and makes it merely a feat of gymnastic skill. These photographs taken at the recent Los Angeles Invitational Indoor Track Meet by Valley Times TODAY staff photographer Alan Hyde dramatically illustrate the tremendous catapulting effect the fibre glass [sic] pole gave Dave Tork for his winning vault." The track meet was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. See images 00156946 through 00156949 for all photos in this series.
