Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
A San Pedro High dropout, Parnelli Jones drove jalopies on the dirt track of Gardena Stadium before graduating to the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR circuit. He was the first to break the 150 m.p.h. barrier at Indy, then won the race in 1963 for J.C. Agajanian (right). He also won the Indy 500 as an owner (1970, 1971), with Al Unser at the helm.
