In 1955, actress Jane Russell founded the World Adoption International Fund, sometimes locally referred to as the Women's Adoption International Fund. WAIF was a volunteer organization designed to help facilitate overseas adoptions by American couples. Russell adopted three children with husband Bob Waterfield and her career was nearly ended because of one of the adoptions. Photograph caption dated April 30, 1962 reads "From left are Mmes. Brooks, Welsh, chairman, Greene." The article partially reads "The Women's Adoption International Fund of Los Angeles will celebrate the placement of WAIF's 10,000th child at a dinner May 13 during the group's Millionaire Fair."
