Description
Phoenix Milling opened at this location at J and 13th Street in the late 1850s where it remained until 1913, when it moved to what is now the Globe Mills Building at 12th and C Street. Throughout the 19th century they marketed their whole grain wheat flour as a finer alternative to graham flour. In 1885, a fire damaged the building, which required some reconstruction. In 1887, they installed steel rollers in the mill to produce what they advertised as flour that was "white and strong - the best in the market." In 1892, they mounted an advertising campaign against The Central Milling Company, a large flour production company based in Southern California and encouraged Sacramento residents to support local business in the face of aggressive competition. In October of 1901, company president George Schroth suffered a stroke and died in February of the following year, leaving the company presidency to his son John.
