Description
A photograph of the western facade of the California State Insectary founded by Elwood Cooper in 1907 and formally opened in 1908 under the direction of State Commissioner of Horticulture J.W. Jeffrey after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake destroyed the original State Insectary. The building was designed by George C. Sellon, California's first State Architect. At the time of its creation, its promoters asserted that it was the only such institution in the United States and the largest in the world. The State Insectary's creators intended for it to be a means of "propagating" insects beneficial to agriculture, such as ladybugs, and familiarizing growers with those which are detrimental. This photo was taken between 1908 and 1913, when state builders constructed a greenhouse on the southern side of the building
