Article by Charles Handy on the theme of his new book, The Empty Raincoat. Handy explains that his book is really about the many paradoxes that characterize modern society in its organizations. The ultimate paradox, as Handy sees it, is that in pursuit of efficiency and riches, corporate society may have increased skilled jobs but down skilled people for the rest of their lives, resulting in a net decrease in productive activity and efficiency. Handy proceeds to highlight how it is necessary for successful capitalism to provide an equal chance to be unequal.
