Note: "Kg. Ndj. Bruder Nzi Fewu m. Kind. Nzi Fewu ist auch einer von denen, bei denen das Christentum eine Macht geworden ist. Er hatte schon jahrelang ein stattliches Gehöfte aber Kinder besass er keine, und oft stieg deswegen in ihm die sorgenvolle Frage auf 'Was wird es sein sein, das ich gesammelt habe?' Er kam auch zu den Missionaren und brachte seinen Herzenswunsch vor, und wir gaben ihm den Rat, um ein Kind zu bitten, bei dem, der mit seinem Wort die ganze Welt erschaffen hat. Wie gross war die Freude bei unserem Königsbruder, als nach Jahr und Tag ein Kindlein ihm geschenkt wurde, ein kleines Mägdlein, das den Namen 'die grosse Stadt' führt. - In Bamum ist es Sitte, dass jedem Kind sofort nach der Geburt eine Medizin ins Mäulchen gesteckt wird zur Abwehr alles Bösen. Natürlich wollte die Mutter der 'grossen Stadt' ihr Kindlein auch gegen jeden schlimmen Einfluss feien und ihm auch ein solches Mittelchen verabfolgen. Da wehrte sich aber der Vater und sagte: 'Nein, das lasse ich nun nicht geschehen. Ich habe mein Kind von Gott erbeten, er kann es auch bewahren'. - Unser Königsbruder gehört auch sonst zu den 'Stillen im Lande'. Lautes Leben, frohe Feste und wüste Trinkgelage sind ihm zuwider. Man trifft ihn gewöhnlich in seinem Gehöfte unter einem Baum sitzend, mit einer feinen und kunstvollen Stickerei beschäftigt. Man wundert sich über die feinen Zeichnungen, die er für seine Satteldecken, Taschen, Mützen und Kleiderärmel selbst entwirft, und man freut sich über die prächtigen Farbenzusammenstellungen, die bei allen seinen Arbeiten zu finden sind." Nzi Fewu is also one of those for whom christianity has become a powerful influence and orientation. For many years he has had a substantial compound, but he had no children. And so he often asked unhappily What will be the sigificance of what I have collected together[sic] ? He came to the missionaries, too, and expressed his hearfelt longing, and we advised him to ask for a child from Him who has created the whole world. How great was his joy a year and a day later when a child was indeed given him, a little girl, who was given the name The Big City . - In Bamum there is the custom that every child, immediately after birth, gets a piece of medicine put into its mouth as a protection against all kinds of evil. Naturally the mother of Big City also wanted to protect her little child against all evil influences and wanted to give her the medicine in the usual way. But the father did not want to do this and said No! I will not let this happen! I prayed God to give me this child, and God is able protect it. - Our King s brother is one of those whom we could call the quiet ones in the land [the German form of this expression is used as a typical expression to refer to pietists and puritans - PJ]. He does not like noisy behaviour, happy festivals and heavy drinking. You usually find him sitting in his compound under a tree doing fine and artistic embroidery. One admires the fine drawings which he himself makes for his saddle blankets, bags, headgear and sleeves. And one is delighted by the magnificent combinations of colour you find in all his work. (A.
