Description
The interior of the Westminster Presbyterian Church at Thirteenth and N Streets is captured in this June 16, 1928, photograph. Visible is one of the two rose windows, one facing east and one facing west, each with a diameter of 20 feet. The pews and presbytery were customized for the new building and built of fumed oak. The church’s nave was intended to be built in the shape of a Greek cross while heating and air was pumped into the nave through mushroom-shaped cuts underneath the seats. The church’s construction was a monumental event for the congregation and as Edgar Williams, a writer for the “Christian Herald,” stated prior to its dedication in 1927, “The influence of a stately, well-planned church building upon the life of a community is like that of a strong, attractive personality, whose character and deeds command respect and often win much more.”
