Description
Handwritten on reverse: Markham House Cottage - So. 8 St. San Jose. Snapt by Clara Percy Westphal to illustrate poem - "To Edwin Markham." Second note in a different hand: This is the "tree of Heaven" or Ailanthus, which for years has shaded the Home of Edwin Markham in San Jose. In summer its profuse linden like fooliage sheltered him as a young man attending college and later as a young teacher and when he penned the first draft of the Man with the Hoe. Please return to Miss Westphal 710 East San Fernando San Jose.
