Before cycling, she was a speed skater, competing in the 1972 Olympics, finishing 7th in the 1500m. At fourteen, she was and remains the youngest American woman to compete in a winter Olympics. An injury prompted her to turn to cycling and in 1976 she began racing. She won several national championships before winning the Olympic gold medal in 1984. She won the race in a sprint over fellow American Rebecca Twigg. She is married to fellow Olympic medalist and retired professional cyclist Davis Phinney. Rebecca Twigg was born in Seattle, Washington in 1963. She won 6 world championships and 16 U.S. championships before winning Olympic medals, the silver medal in 1984 and the bronze in 1992. Two other cyclists can be seen in the background. Carpenter finished first and Twigg second in the first Olympic women's cycling road race in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. The 1984 Games was the first time that a women's cycling event had been included in the Olympics. The event took place on a 9.85 mile track in Mission Viejo, California.
