Description
Photograph of the cornerstone laying ceremony at Chamber of Commerce Building, between 1st Street and 2nd Street on Broadway, 1903. A marching band stands at parade rest in front of a large crowd of spectators. Spectators not only filled the streets, sidewalks, but also the balconies, roofs and fire escape ladder wells of the Chamber of Commerce building and nearby buildings as well. Several American flags can be seen draped along the side of the Chamber of Commerce building at right, and another flag is also visible in the foreground at right.
Legible signs include: "[...]och Bro's, West Virginia, lean lasting chew, reform in tabacco, cool sweet smoke, [...]ail pouch", "Bryson Block", "Un[derwood] stand[...] vis[...] typewriter, f[...]er br[...] [...]agent", "The Herald, always on top, Stromee", "'Vorwaerts!', watch us grow, the new Chamber of Commerce, the old reliable Los Angeles Times ("Times" was edited out), a full grown newspaper but no 'organ'", "Johnston did it", "Busch the hatter".
