Photograph of a drawing depicting a view of Sutter's Mill at Coloma, where James Marshall discovered gold in 1848, June 19, 1898. The mill is at center and consists of a small log building near the top of a waterfall. There is another log building at right and an American flag is raised on a pole behind it. The surrounding area is full of tall pine trees, and several small groups of men are scattered throughout, some near the river, and others in the foreground at right.
