Description
Central Park Tract was formed in 1887 when Ezra Kysor, architect of the Pico House, Merced Theater and St. Vibiana's Cathedral, decided to sell his 35-acre parcel south of town. He filed the tract for subdivision and titled it "Central Park Tract." The Los Angeles and Vernon Street Railway was incorporated to run to the property. Central Avenue was laid out on either side of the trolley line. Central Park Tract contained many blocks. Among the blocks were two blocks labelled "Central Park." These two blocks were set aside with beautiful plantings and the Kysor home, but these blocks were subdivided in 1904. The photograph shows the layout of the park and the Kysor home as one entered from Central Avenue. Central Park was renamed Pershing Square a week after Armistice Day in 1918 in honor of Gen. John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing.
Two men sit on a bench on a tree-lined pathway in Central Park, Los Angeles. The photograph caption reads "Gardens of Los Angeles and vicinity in mid-winter."
