Photograph article dated October 3, 1962 partially reads, "Robert Gray has more chinchillas at his Burbank home today than the entire world had 40 years ago. Gray, a chinchilla export specialist, has facilities to house 1,000 of the pearly gray animals, but, he says, 'We're never completely filled up.' In the 1920s, there were reportedly 12 chinchillas in the world. 'About 100 years ago, chinchilla became very popular, and the animals just disappeared,' Gray explained. 'Soon there were apparently none left.' He pointed out that 12 of the animals were discovered in the South American Andes - the place of their origin - and 11 of these were sent to the Los Angeles area for breeding. 'With improved techniques and knowledge, chinchilla breeding developed into a thriving industry. Raising the animals was no longer a speculative thing,' Gray said." Photograph caption reads, "Robert Gray, left, shows chinchilla to Spanish visitors. Francisco Garcia Medina, right, pats the animal; Francisco M. Borondo looks on."
