The photo caption printed in the Sacramento Bee on September 20, 1973 states: "The crater rim near the top of Mr. Lassen, now silent, is sharply defined in this view looking toward the northern range. Lassen Volcanic National Park's jurisdiction embraces more than 160 square miles of similar desolation."
