Description
ABSTRACT The Claremont Colleges Sustainability Survey was conducted to assist efforts to improve ecological sustainability at the colleges, specifically by serving as an evaluative tool and by highlighting the social utility of campus conservation. The immediate goals of the survey were to collect information that would serve as a baseline for environmental orientations and behaviors at the Claremont Colleges, to obtain community members’ evaluations of conservation and landscaping practices at the colleges, and to obtain recommendations to improve the sustainability of landscaping practices. Results show respondents to be highly environmentally oriented and engaged, but somewhat dissatisfied with conservation efforts on campus, particularly as they relate to landscaping and water consumption. Recommendations to improve ecological sustainability at the colleges support increasing the use of native and drought resistant vegetation and trees, as well as generally reducing the amount of lawns and water used for maintenance.
