Description
During summer 2008 a GIS-based Urban Ecosystem Analysis of the Claremont Colleges Campuses was conducted. This research was part of a larger initiative supported by the Council of Presidents to assess the environmental impact of the Claremont Colleges Campuses and to implement new ideas and approaches for advancing environmental sustainability. This project investigated the benefits of increasing the tree canopy coverage to (35%), which can provide measurable benefits in economic, environmental, energy saving, and social terms, through the planting and reservation of appropriate tree species. Expanding upon the summer 2007 Claremont Graduate University Urban Ecosystem Analysis pilot study1, this project specifically investigated the benefits of the existing tree canopy as well as increasing the tree canopy coverage to (35%); included the development of a methodology, and analysis, of where to plant additional trees; investigated appropriate tree species to plant as well as stakeholder preferences for tree types and landscaping; and reviewed sustainable land use practices and identified strategies to conduct a tree planting initiative.
