Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
The part of the city called "Sonora Town" was an old adobe village north of the Plaza and Church of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels. It was Los Angeles' first Mexican quarters, or barrio. The area was named for the numerous miners and families who came from Sonora, Mexico, and may have still been around in the 1930s. Now it is Los Angeles' Chinatown District.
A few storefronts can be seen in this photograph. Among them: a barbershop at 662 S. Spring St., possibly once the home of Christobal Aguilar. At 660 S. Spring St. is a restaurant offering Spanish-American cooking. La Mexicana, located at 658 S. Spring St., is another barbershop with a sign on the lower corner of the window that reads: "Se limpia, plancha y compone ropa" (translation: "Cleaning, ironing and mending of clothes"). And Rocha's Barber Shop, located at 656 S. Spring St., which offers "baths, or ban?os". Photograph dated: 1929.
