Description
Located on the ground floor of the Homer Laughlin Building, Grand Central Market is an open stall bazaar that extends from Broadway to Hill Street. It is home to over 40 merchants, selling everything from food, to produce, to ice cream. It officially opened in 1917, and catered to the well-to-do Angelinos that rode the Angels Flight Railway, allowing for easy access to the best open-air shopping in town. The upper portion of the building, the Homer Laughlin Building, was built in 1897 and expanded in 1905 under architect Harrison Albright's supervision, and once housed an office for American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In the 1990's both the Homer Laughlin Building as well as Grand Central Market underwent a major renovation and residential units were added at that time. Grand Central Market is located at 317 S. Broadway in the heart of downtown. Photograph dated February 2000.
