San Fernando Valley State College later became California State University, Northridge. Photograph article dated April 2, 1963 partially reads, "A new art gallery has opened in Northridge. It's purpose: dedication to freedom of expression. It's owners: a group of Valley State College students. Five students put an exhibit together at their new gallery after an art exhibit at the college was canceled. The cancellation came after the school asked one of five participating art galleries to remove a piece of sculpture considered inappropriate by school officials. Instead, the gallery removed all of its exhibits and the other four galleries did the same. 'We are trying to give the students an experience that the college has, in effect, denied them,' one of the students said. There are about 40 art objects - ranging from paintings to sculpture - in the exhibit which is in a private home across the street from the college at 18207 Vincennes St." Photograph caption reads, "Valley State College students open their own art exhibit. Camille Scortino, left, and Sylvia Stachura feel principle is involved."
