Description
This 1872 marriage license and certificate for James Miller and Margaret Kennedy reflects important changes in Santa Clara’s society: an increasing non-hispanic immigration, the Jesuit presence (Fr. Masnata S.J., pastor of Santa Clara, officiated the marriage), as well as the intervention of the state (not only the church) in regulating marriage.
